Biological properties of the Chilean native moss Sphagnum magellanicum.

An ethanol extract prepared from the gametophyte Chilean native moss Sphagnum magellanicum was dried out, weighed and dissolved in distilled water. This extract was then assayed for its antibacterial activity against the G(-) bacteria Azotobacter vinelandii, Erwinia carotovora subsp. carotovora, Enterobacter aerogenes, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella typhi, Vibrio cholerae,...

Studies on chromium(III) removal from aqueous solutions by sorption on Sphagnum moss peat

Batch sorption experiments were performed for the removal of chromium(III) ions from aqueous solutions using Romanian Sphagnum moss peat (untreated and treated with NaCl solution) as sorbent. In order to establish the best conditions for the sorption of chromium(III), the influence of initial pH, contact time, peat dose and metal ion concentration was investigated. The Freundlich, Langmuir and ...

Copper Adsorption by Sphagnum Peat Moss and Its Different Humic Fractions

The Cu(II) binding properties of Canadian Sphagnum peat moss, humic acid and humin extracted from the peat moss were investigated. Batch pH profile experiments indicated that the adsorption of Cu(II) is pH dependent. At pH 4.0 and 5.0 about 99% of the Cu(II) was bound by all three biomasses. Time-dependent experiments showed that the binding of Cu(II) is very rapid. The Cu(II) binding capacitie...

Sphagnum moss in World War I: the making of surgical dressings by volunteers in Toronto, Canada, 1917-1918.

In World War I, the shortage and cost of cotton and the unexpected need for an immense supply of surgical dressings made it necessary for Britain to experiment with a number of materials as a replacement. Though many previously used fibres and materials were tried, sphagnum moss, which had been judged beneficial in 1881 by G. Neuber, a German surgeon, and which had been adopted by the French Wa...
